Individual Crossroads Reflections

David Starr

First Crossroads student ….. EVER
Currently living in Monett, MO

Yes, someone had to be the first student to enroll at Crossroads. He was a delightful young man named David Starr who lived on Maryland in the Central West End. Arthur had taught his older sister several years before at Whitfield, but it took a bold young man and family to be willing to be the first to jump aboard the Crossroads train.

(updates in BOLD CAPS)

I have so many fond memories from those years… I do remember you (Arthur and Carol) coming to my mom’s home. Today I am full of gratitude for you allowing me to work for my tuition. McDonald’s was a firm foundation to start work. Crossroads was a firm education with creative teaching. It fit so well with my lifestyle. It was then a very smooth transition to Metro High.

I remember Kim (REYNOLDS) who ended up at Mary Institute. She was in my math class at Crossroads. She was like a model.

I was friends with Kevin (JAMES) who loved karate. Also, the guy whose dad was a Cardinal football player (actually there were two: (a) Frank Roy, Jr. whose father was an offensive guard on the Big Red, and (b) Monty Rivers whose dad, Jamie, was a linebacker with the Cardinals).

I am now making tables and wooden based baskets… some quite nice. I think about Andy when I make them… as he had us use decommissioned flooring from old homes to make our cutting boards, maple if I remember. Arthur and Carol were rock stars… Meghan (McCULLOUGH) and her skinny blonde friend; I can’t remember her name (HEATHER BROOKS).

But so many blasts from the past. I have been working my way across the Appalachian Trail for the last 13 years, small sections at a time. Good to hear from you.

David continues the woodworking that he began at Crossroads in the 1970s.
